Where the Path Leads - The Shore is Just The Beginning

I took this photo on a recent trip to California and didn't see it for what it was till I had time to think due to a photoshoot being postponed today. Initially when I saw the shot I was intrigued by the path but didn't understand that it led to a shore. As your eyes follow the path to the shore, you will see that there are places where the path is clear and others that aren't revealed, but as you can see all ends well at the shore.

The path appears to be broken in a few places and I akin that to people in our lives and our walk. There are people we want to nudge off the path, not necessarily to their peril but off our personal walk. There are others that were part of our walk that we want to re-join us again and we hope they are waiting for us at some point on our journey where our walk becomes clearer.

Whatever the path, there is beauty.... Whatever the path, there are cliffs.... Whatever the path there is a shore that we're all trying to get to.... Some "will" alone, some "will" pick up others along the way and some "will" nudge others off their path. The journey in this life to our shore is not easy but deep like the journey to the shore below. It's not without its' rewards and sometimes the greatest reward is making it to the shore but that's where the life really begins right.......

Here's to the journey along the path to our shore and that's where the fun begins.....

Could it be I stayed away too long...

Remember that "cut" above from Michael Jackson "MJ"? For me, if I'm not shooting, listening to music and/or singing, I am dying a slow death...... I know this might sound strange but I have been watching myself for a while and have come to this conclusion. Now the fun begins...

I once tried to do all three (shooting, listening to music and singing) while doing a wedding scouting shoot in a Japanese garden in Spokane Washington. Well I got a lot of crooked pictures but it was all good because I was in a zone doing the three things in life that sustain me. Anyway, that's what the crop tool is for right?

I am at that point in my life's journey where I am getting a lot of insight about myself, my work, my relationships, etc... from God, my friends and family and I need and appreciate every bit of it because I know it's all in love.

When I started this blog it was about pictures and insightfullness. Then against my better judgement I made it about "just" pictures then I stopped blogging for a bit, started back up again then stopped blogging altogether. Well I'm not ready to start blogging again but when I do, I will be back to my "Art"; Sharing LOVE with others through photography....

The death of my dear Mother towards the end of last year is still very painful to my core. I shared a lot of my pain on Facebook and I'm not use to being that transparent but for some reason I needed to be honest with myself about how I was feeling. The pain is still very much present like it was yesterday and it reminded me how little time we have here and to make some necessary but long overdue changes in my life. Not shooting anymore WAS on the table. I believe God took my desire away for a while to help me grieve and not use photography to mask my pain. Changes continue even as I blog this but God's grace is sufficient to see me through..... Sweetest name I know...

I expect to be back at blogging at some point and I will let God decide when the time is right and what it looks like. My work continues though and can be seen on my fanpage on Facebook. I have a few projects in flight that I am pretty excited about. The first project traverses the Globe from here at home and is called "Same Sun". "Same Sun" is a journey through several cultures of Asia, Africa and here in the United States and examines differences that would appear to divide but actually brings awareness to how much we are all alike. The project will culminate into 4 books, the last of which will be titled "Black is Beautiful, Black is Power". The name was revealed to me a few weeks ago and I expect the other three names will come when it's time. Same Sun - China

I have begun work on a project that has really/truly been a blessing to me only 3-4 weeks into it. It reminds me that no matter the rivers that divide us, the past generational cultural relationships, we are "all the same". We breath the same air, cry the same tears, laugh with the same joy and look up at the "Same Sun" above.

Half Saree Ceremony

Last April, I was afforded the opportunity to shoot a Half Saree ceremony for a young Indian youth here in town. I was "all in" having never done one of these and with my continued "love affair" with the Indian culture. As expected the pageantry of colors was amazing as was the beauty of the women and charisma/character of the men. I was engulfed in all of this and really enjoyed how welcome they made this 6'3" black man who pretty much towered over everyone.

I had a tremendous time and was working on getting a few of these pics to one of the women who attended the event and it dawned on me that I never posted any of the pictures. Enjoy the colors and beauty. Also, please click on the link above to get more information on the ceremony.

Man of Steel

I had the opportunity to meet Delvar during the first practice for the Macy's Fashion show. As soon as I met this brotha I thought, gotta get him in the "port" right away. Well that didn't happen for a bit as practice and work kept me pretty busy but we finally got a quick shoot in after the show was over. Delvar had done runway modeling in the past but as you can tell, his skills extend beyond the runway. I gave him some direction but he didn't need much and we got a lot of great images in a short period of time.

We found an alley where I was able to control most of the light and used a small Westcott softbox to illuminate him and knock down some of the surrounding ambient light. I am learning more how to better control the light "in camera" in my photographs so I don't have to fight with Photoshop and Lightroom later. Hopefully I will get a chance to get Delvar in the studio next...

Tatjana - From Russia with Love

By the time this gets posted, Reagan's blog "Not a Bad Shot" will be live. Reagan was one of the first people I've ever shot where I couldn't take a bad shot and while that still rings true, here comes Tatjana. I didn't know she was from Russia till we began our conversation and started sharing our stories. I truly believe that this is not a meeting of chance but speaks to my ministry of meeting and experiencing people from other cultures with experiences different from those of my own.

Tatjana and I are going to hook up this month for a fashion shoot of sorts and are currently collaborating on what this looks like. Whatever we come up with I promise you will be very fashionable, striking and beautiful. I will be launching a new joint website with Tommie Chadwick (makeup and hairstylist) for my fashion work which is moving along and maturing very nicely. I pray you keep coming back for more beautiful images and updates my other projects.

The Singing Dragon - 42nd St. Times Square

My uncle and I had our final dinner of my trip at the Cafe Noir restaurant down the street from his job. On the subway ride back to his house, he got off a stop ahead of me at 34th street to catch the Long Island Expressway train home. I continued on to 42nd St Port Authority headed for Time Square to get some night shots for my portfolio. As I got off the train and headed up the stairs towards ground I was trying to figure out if I should go right/left to my destination. As I reached the top of the stairs I heard what sounded like a concert coming down in the subway that I didn't hear when I got of at my stop. The sound halted me in my tracks as I debated going back down in the tunnel to see what was really going on. As I walked down the stairs, there was a crowd of people applauding someone but I was earnestly looking for the band and the "who". Well the E train was pulling seconds later and some of the crowd jumped on the train but a few faithful souls like myself stayed for more; but who the heck was singing???

As I looked around, I saw this older African American man, probably in his 60s, holding what appeared to be a Walkman CD player (his band) seated next to a cart with speakers that amplified his accompanying music. Well I wasn't 100% sure that is was him because there was no microphone and he was just kinda sitting there looking happy and content.

Then what happened next blew me away as he hit the play button on the CD player and started crooning the crowd. This man had a POWERFUL voice which needed no microphone as he lit up the subway tunnels. His only competition which wasn't ever a fair fight was the train as it swept to a stop on either wide of him during his redemptions of songs sung my famous artist if his time.

As must have states there listening to him for 15-20 minutes as he sung and spoke of his music, famous people he sung with in front of his well earned bag of money from the crowd from donations and CD sales. I gave my donation to the cause as I listening, smiled and took pictures of this subway wonder. Now I wasn't going to leave this story by just referring to him as a "subway" wonder as it wouldn't have done his life or musical works justice. Right before I took off for Time Square, I complimented him again on his music and asked for his name. He told me that he is known as the "Singing Dragon". Well the "Singing Dragon" at age 69 had some footwork to go along with that voice. I figured this was my chance to get away or else I would have been there all night seduced by a "Dragon" as so many of us were that evening; a nice treat to end my last full day in Manhattan.

Skyline of Love - Lauren an Matt

While in New York visiting family a few months ago, I was taking the bus from Queens into New Jersey to visit my grandmother. As we exited the tunnel into New Jersey around 8:00pm, my breath was taken away by this beautiful view of the New York skyline from across the river. If it weren't for my suitcase and camera bag, I would have jumped off the bus, started shooting and figured out how to get to my grandmothers house later. Well good sense prevailed and I stayed on the bus but was trying to figure out how to get the shot.

The very next day, my Aunt and I decided to go back into the city and I thought, here's my chance. I took a later subway ride and bus back into New Jersey and got off the bus to take my shots; only problem was that I got to my location too early and had to wait for nightfall. So I decided to stroll around this park across the bay from the skyline which is where I first saw Lauren and thought, WOW!!! I would love to photograph her. Then a few steps later as I walked around I ran Matt and thought, these two must be together and I would love the opportunity to photograph this couple. As I got closer a car pulled up with two photographers and I quickly figured out what was happening and I thought, "'I've got some time on my hands so I will watch this engagement shoot till my light it right"; all of us photographers LOVE to watch!!! LOL...

After "watching" for a bit, I started to engage the photographers and offered some "head nods" when I saw things that I liked. One of the photogs was having trouble controlling the background light with her flash, I provided some suggestions which helped her get the background light under control and I was her new BFF. After watching for their shoot for another 5-10 minutes, the two photogs invited me to shoot with them after clearing it with the couple, "Lauren and Matt" who were doing engagement photo's for their 2011 wedding. So here's my little confession or excuse for the quality below. When going into New York for the day, I left my backup batter for my main camera and my main flash as I didn't plan on shooting people that day. So I shot this with my Canon 30D at very high ISOs with no flash so I had to wait till almost dusk in order to pull in the New York skyline while getting Lauren and Matt exposed properly.

I really enjoyed myself with this couple and in meeting some photog brother-in and sister-in. Did I mention how much I LOVE and MISS the East Coast which will always be home for me.

Not a Bad Shot!

I'd like to believe that every photographer runs into a client, bride, teen, child, someone or something that captures their eye that makes it impossible to take a bad shot. Now we the photographer need to make sure we do the technical things in order to create a beautiful image but I still think it's somewhat rare. Well I ran into one of those rarities in Reagan. I was able to get out with her a couple times and each shoot left me in awe!!! This is one of those jewels I've been holding onto unless you've been out to my Facebook fanpage.

I have sooooo many stunning images of Reagan that it was impossible to choose my favorites so I closed my eyes and started flagging images for the blog and then limited myself to these few. Enjoy these and don't be surprised if there is another post about Reagan...

Studio meet Angey, Angey meet Studio!!!

So the story goes that I was sitting at the bar at one of my favorite restaurants in town and was waited on by Angey. We had never met before, things were slow in the restaurant so I mentioned that I was a professional photographer and had done some work for the restaurant . Well she remembered me being there on a couple occasions shooting, said she loved my work and that she was a graphic artist and done the menus and other artwork for the re-branding of the restaurant.

As we spoke more I mentioned that I loved her "look" and that I wanted to get her in the studio; she was "all-in". Now when I post the rest of the pictures, you will notice that she has a "few" tattoos. Well believe it or not, I didn't at the time we met but quickly noticed them as we were getting her ready for her photoshoot. My first thought was "that's interesting" but my second thought was "we're going to have some fun" and we definitely did. I am showing you, in this preview, my second favorite shot from her studio session. More to come on Angie and my catchup from the Spring/Summer.

Hardly Trying

I've been here all the time.... I know you've been wondering where I've been but LIFE has been kicking my butt lately but it's all about persistence and growth right?

I am all caught up from my editing and am now going back and posting shoots from the summer. I shot a fashion show this past summer at our local Macy's and in the process of working with the coordinator looking for models, we ran into Ruby. From the minute we saw her we wanted her in the show but Ruby was headed to India for a wedding and to visit family. Well I'm pretty persistent so I finally caught up with her to see how the trip went and for a quick shoot. We found some shade in an alley and then I had her play in the sunlight and really enjoyed how she lit up each frame. We will hook up again when school slows down for her but for now enjoy part 1 of my experiences with Ruby.

On Friday November 19th in the early hours of the morning in a little town in Northern New Jersey, I lost my biggest fan; my Mom. It was a very unexpected loss for us that came with no warning and still to this day has me shaken to the core. Like some, I did not lose or question my faith but leaned on it and my family/friends to make it through a very tough time.

My Mom, pictured in this collage below with my Dad, was a Nurse who lived a life that aligned with the oath each Nurse takes to all she came in contact with; she was a caregiver. I heard many of those stories and others (wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend) during her homegoing celebration and continue to hear more about her life as my family bands together to cope with our loss. BUT, I had to understand two things in order to get through this and put things into perspective. 1) She belonged to God first and that He took her back home to be with him so that has helped tremendously. 2) She IS still with us in LOVE and in SPIRIT and although she's no longer here physically, she lives on through those who knew and loved her. I can still hear her voice in my head telling me it's going to be ok and that she will see me soon.

I am writing all of this not as closure but as part of my journey. An early part of that journey was to be transparent within the Facebook community as to what I was going through. I couldn't express through the 420 character "status" limit how much the support I received through Facebook meant to me but I can through my Blog. We all know the bad rap Facebook takes as some people have chosen to tell all of their personal business in that venue but we don't talk enough about how people have been blessed through the support of the Facebook community; family and friends. I was blessed tremendously by their support through my journey back to the East Coast and travels up/down the highway from North Carolina to New Jersey and back again. I didn't get a chance to respond back to every person who posted on my wall, who sent me a personal message or just prayed for me/us but I want everyone to know that I read each and every note. Words truly cannot express how much it all meant and I thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart.

Getting back to my passion of photography is proving harder that I thought it would be. I have made some small steps with plans for two January shoots because it's what my Mother would have wanted. My Mother never saw a lot of my work so I plan on putting together a slideshow of my favorite pictures from the last few years as a tribute to her. I am what I am today and have achieved what I've achieved because of both of my parents pictured below. Please keep us all in your thoughts and prayers...

The New "Station 220"

Several weeks ago, I did a shoot for the new Station 220 restaurant which is the old Central Station in downtown Bloomington. I met Steffan Block who was returning to Central Station to help re-invent and re-brand the restaurant into Station 220. A key to that rebranding was the acquisition of Executive Chef Rick Sipovic who brought in a new menu of exciting and very tasty dishes; this isn’t your old Central Station folks. I was asked by Steffan to be part of that rebranding through what I could deliver with my camera and I was more than happy to help out.

So I trotted over to Station 220 one late afternoon with my white satin shoot through umbrella, Alien Bees, Pocket Wizard and started shooting. Shaista Hussain, another very capable photographer, helped me arrange my lighting, suggested angles, did some shooting herself and also helped sample some of the dishes after we were done. The entire experience was very surreal for all of us as I shot tethered using that new feature in Adobe Lightroom 3 and a very loooong USB cable attached to my camera. Shooting tethered allowed Steffan and Chef to see the pictures right as they were coming off the camera and provide me with immediate feedback. At one point we had the staff from the restaurant and some of the guests engaged with the shoot as they wondered what we were doing. It was an awesome experience for all of us and getting immediate feedback was also awesome.

I just finished the job this week and you can see some of my pre-work on their new Station 220 website. If you haven’t been to the new Station 220, I highly recommend it as they have and continue to make changes to the restaurants ambiance

as well as the menu.

Btw, you can wipe the drool off your computer screens now!!! J

got Inspiration, giving Inspiration

Two simple question to my blog readers domestic and abroad, onshore and offshore, PC or Mac, Adult or Child, Man or Woman; doesn’t matter if you populate this Big Blue Ball we call home than you’re included. Very simply, 1) Where do you draw inspiration from? 2) Who do you inspire? Respond in the context you feel most comfortable with, respond using your blogger profile, respond anonymously, I don’t care as long as you respond…..

For me, I draw my support and inspiration from above; first and foremost. I’m never let down, disappointed and it gives me the conviction to do better in spite of myself. I am a “giver” by nature and have been told that I can at times be inspiring and insightful. I am drawn, by nature, to people that are inspiring and for me it’s people and things that make me “think”. As I look around the planet with these new eyes of mine, I am intrigued and inspired by everything that has been placed here to meet our needs, dreams, hopes, etc. It’s amazing when you realize how perfect it all works together once we get the right pieces and place them right where they belong. Even when the wrong pieces collide it can be quite awesome and inspiring if we just open our mind….. That’s the perspective I come from. From a day job perspective it’s Malcolm Gladwell, Tom Peters, Rhonda Byrne, Marianne Williamson and FastCompany magazine and not necessarily in that order. From my other day job perspective it’s Ross Oscar Knight, Carlos Baez, Zack Arias and Art Wolfe each of who have a specific gift for capturing “all the pieces” of the puzzle in their exquisiteness and getting them to make sense, “fit”, defy the odds, keep you wanting to see more and challenge your paradigms…

Who do I inspire? That’s a little trickier because sometimes I/we never really know. It could be “all of you” or “none of you” who view my work on this Blog, my travel Blog or my website? It could be all or none of the people I photograph for weddings, lifestyle sessions, family portraits, fashion, etc. It could be all or none of the people I mentor at my “day job” on a monthly basis who provide me with just as much insight and drive as I hope I give back to them. It could be all or none of the photographers I’ve opened up my mind to over the last 12 months as these photographic concepts are finally sinking in. It could all of the above or none of the above which makes realize I have room to improve, “do more” and “do more better”. Conditionally I’d like to stipulate a sincere ‘thank you” and “pay it forward” for the people I engage BUT a “gift” with conditions isn’t a gift and inspiration should be “free of charge” right?

So, please respond from the context that makes sense for you. Respond as “you” or “anonymously “; I don’t care I just want to have a conversation with the Blog community on the topic. Don’t wimp out on me U.S. as this Blog has been visited by each US State. Offshore/abroad, I know you are reading as well as I’ve gotten hits from each country except Greenland, Central Africa and South Central Asia. So read, reflect and respond…

No Place Like Home

I have returned from my travels back home to the East Coast to visit my family and shoot Mr. Kenneth Hitchens. There are about 7-8 different and distinct stories to tell about my travels (NY/NJ/MD) of which I will be blogging about in the near future with the accompanying images. I had a great time and the highlight of my visit was seeing my little (22yr. old) daughter Nichole. I had a great time hanging with her and her boyfriend Kyle and I am hoping we can all see each other again real soon.

Chris and Erica - Sweetest Somebody I Know

I met this couple a year ago at a wedding reception that I shot for Twyana and Darnell who will be celebrating their 1 year anniversary in a few days. I met Chris and Erica while walking around the reception hall taking pictures of couples while waiting on the bride and groom to arrive. After the wedding I connected with Erica to get their picture to them from the reception and found out that they were engaged and that the picture I took was the BEST picture they had taken together. It was at that moment that they decided that they wanted me to shoot their wedding which would take place in a little less than a year.

We all got busy as we do in our daily lives and we went back and forth with schedules trying to coordinate their engagement session. We finally got a date down and a beautiful house for their shoot and I took the first picture below which says a lot about the couple, their story and what would be the foundation for their marriage ahead. Well their wedding was this past Sunday at Kickapoo Creek Winery and as I was uploading their images to my computer, I came upon the second picture in this post which now becomes one of the best pictures I have even taken at a wedding. Finding North

I haven't blogged about my goals in quite some time and I thought it would be a good time to get back to this practice. Although I am still learning Photoshop and didn't officially get published in 2009, it was still an outstanding year!!!!! I did 4 weddings and several other shoots that have really helped me grow as a photographer and in my ability to engage clients. I got a chance to travel and do a wedding in Negril-Jamaica, Spokane-Washington and a couple weddings closer to home. I met and photographed a two tour Vietnam Veteran, Ms. Island Mokihana 2010 and shot a slew of other people who graced my camera with their presence. It was a very good year and I am excited about what’s next for me and the business.

There are way to many professional photographers and other people to list here who have helped me along the journey. They all know who they are, I have already thanked them personally and will forever be in their debt. As you can see, I am back from my blogging hiatus trying to catch everyone up from the work I’ve done this year. Macy's Fashion Show - Sneak Peek

Did you get em off the hard drive??? My Best Friend/Frat Brother (Dr. Willis Lonzer III), and I have a long standing joke started by his wife about getting our work off the hard drive; but I won't go into that right now... I just finished uploading all the photo's from all the Macy's Fashion Show practices and event to my computer and I have over 4,500 shots. That's a lot of pictures to backup, edit and get "off the hard drive" to all the wonderful models. Whew!!! I am headed to rehersal and dinner for a wedding I am doing tomorrow but wanted to leave you guys with a picture from the show of one of our "still" models; the lovely Nickki O.

This past weekend our Bloomington/Normal Macy's store hosted a fashion show for the local community. I had the honor of being among three other photographers (Angel Sallade,Chris Sallade and Monte Holiday) to shoot the event which was coordinated by Mrs. Sofia Reed of Macy's. It was an awesome fashion show and our professional models (Terrance McSwain and Isoken Uzamere) as well as the local models (kids and adults) did an outstanding job!!!

I was at almost all of the practices where I took over 2,000 pictures and have a lot of editing to do in the coming weeks. As I was importing the photo's, I came across this one which I had to edit real quick and put on my blog. The next few weeks are going to be a challenging as all the models want to see pics, I have a wedding to prepare for on Sunday and a trip back to the East Coast to see my family and do a shoot in Atlantic City. For now, enjoy this picture from a practice the day before the show.

Relax, Play Games, Take Care of You

I paid a quick visit to Chicago this past weekend to do some shooting for my portfolio. I always love seeing different parts of the city from different angles, etc. I actually got a chance to see one of my favorite views from the other side and I LOVED it. Sometimes we miss things in life because we pay too much attention to things from JUST our perspective...

While I was there I paid a trip to a park in one of the suburbs and took this picture. I am fresh from seeing the movie Eat, Pray, Love and I when I looked at this picture I thought about the movie. This summer has been busier than heck and it's easy to forget to just relax in the midst of everything going on in life. I also thought about the joy of playing games. Doesn't need to be anything special as the main ingredients are family and/or friends and FUN!!! Sometimes the simplest games suffice. Last part is taking time for yourself. We do and we do and we do and we often forget to "Take Care of YOU"...

So with the summer ending soon and all the back to school stuff around the corner, taker time to "Relax, Play Games and Take Care of You".

Party Like it's 1969

Yes I am a Prince fan but this post has nothing to do with him or his music but has all to do with this "1969" Jacket from "The Gap". I fell in love with this jacket from the moment I saw it and I couldn't help myself; had to shoot it. I started my shoot having the mental picture in my head of what I wanted and I got my vision down for the camera after a few minutes. I just LOVE this shot and how the buttons punch out against the jacket. I hope you guys enjoy this.

Macy's 1st Annual Fall Fashion Show

I have the distinct pleasure of working with Macy's and some of the most fashionable kids and adults in the community for Macy's 1st Annual Fall Fashion Show happening August 28th at the Bloomington/Normal store. The theme of the event is "Fall into the Magical Essence of Macy's". These local models have been working hard over the last few weeks getting their runway "Model T" pose and fierce walks on. Last week were were graced with the presence of Chicago's own "Terrance L" (renown model) who took the group to another level as he coached and demonstrated how to wear and walk into that "Macy's Magical Essence".

I LOVE Adobe Lightroom 3

A few weeks ago I was doing a shoot for a local restaurant (Station 220; formerly known as Central Station) and I tried out one of the new features in Lightroom 3; shooting tethered. I absolutely loved it!!!. The head Chef and Manager got to see the pictures as they were coming out of the camera and I was able to keep on shooting in the process. Adobe, thanks for the two home runs you guys have hit with Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3.

Just needed a title so there's nothing more to it then that. Been trying to figure out which is better, natural or artificial light. I have gotten some great shots in natural light lately; especially on those days with "even" light or a cooperative cloud or two. However, here comes the flash with shadows being the only thing to deal with other then strapping on a battery pack and/or lugging equipment around. Here are some pictures I shot last year and over the last couple months as the weather has permitted.

Preaching to the Choir

When I left work yesterday, I came upon these tulips as I was driving by; I truly hope that's what they are as I am not an expert flower person, I just know what captures my eye. As I passed them in my rush to pick kids up from activities, I said to myself, "I have got to shoot these". Towards the end of 2008, I made a conscious decision to focus on people photography through portrait and lifestyle sessions as well as weddings; I am blessed to say I have two (weddings) booked for 2010 thus far. Anyway, I made a decision to shoot these tulips the first chance I got which was two days later.

I picked up a 24-70mm and 16-35mm lens from my bag along with my Canon 1D Mark III and off I went. There were landscapers close to where I was headed and I was hoping they weren't going to be a problem in terms of me being in their way and visa-versa. When I got there, I wasn't going to get one of those shots everyone gets but I wanted something unique and different. Being a little rusty with non-people shots, I was hoping I still had a few tricks up my sleeve. This first shot hit me as an example of the power of God's love in allowing us to prosper in his Grace thus the title "Preaching to the Choir". Here's hoping I got there folks. Got Knowledge? - A Different Kind of Blog Entry

Talking with another aspiring photographer today reminded me about my journey over the last few years as a photographer. No more “similac” and “pull-ups” if I can use those two analogies; we’ve made it to solid foods. I’m almost like the teenager who just got his/her license and is asking Mom and Dad for the keys to the Buick. Photography to me has been one of the most rewarding, inspiring, life changing, difficult, frustrating, annoying things I have ever developed a passion for and I would have it no other way. There is still so much to learn, experiment with and explore that will keep me occupied for quite some time but if it didn’t, I would be bored out of my mind and uninspired.

Over the last 8 months, I have been put in situations where I’ve been asked questions about photography from other young and aspiring photographers that I actually know the answers to; how cool is that…? Way too soon to claim victory but it’s a great feeling none-the-less. So this is one of those Blog entries that’s not about the pictures but more about the thought (s). Inspire someone today! This can come via your photography… If you’re not a photographer use your words (kind words), sharing of knowledge or by reaffirming “yes you can”!!! Someone today needs to hear those words. Someone out there is struggling trying to figure something out that’s pretty important to them and YOU might be the one to help get them over the hump. Someone needs to hear YOUR story so they can “see themselves in it”. Remember, someone or someones did it for you at some point on your journey so now it’s time to “pay it forward”!

The beauty of having a photography Blog is that someone may stop by, maybe just for a moment, and see the pretty pictures. But us “real” bloggers share more than that in hopes that pictures might serve as a “window” into what we have in “common” versus what might “separate” us. Today everyone is choosing up who’s side there going to be on, like we did back when we played kickball on the playground. BUT, who’s going to pick the new kid and help him/her out… I have been blessed to travel across the United States, India, Jamaica, etc. and have learned that we all smile the same, have the same fears, share similar interest and all need knowledge to complete more of this puzzle we call life. Drop by someone today and give them the piece they’ve been looking for… Got Knowledge?

Point and Shoot - Part 2

About a month ago, I had a cup of coffee with a very nice young Indian couple; Shefali and Dushyant. They were friends of friends so I thought it would be a great to visit and talk with them to learn more about the Indian culture in our little town and doing some photography work with them in the future. Shefali was "all in" and immediately excited about things but we had to get Dushyant there. Well it didn’t take him long once he started sharing his own ideas with me about pictures he liked and some he wanted of the two of them. We spoke for several minutes doing some collab/idea kinda stuff and the love these two people shared with one another shined through in the course of the conversation which was very cool to witness. It’s always nice to meet people and people from other cultures to learn about their experiences and find out how much we have in common versus the things we think might divide us or make us different.

I Got Schooled

That's what we normally say on the basketball court when we get a much needed hit to the "ego" in the opposite direction right? Well I stopped off at Starbucks to use the restroom, sit for a bit and review images after a morning shoot. I was going through the images trying to see which ones would make it to the Blog, website, etc. when I ran into another professional photographer. He noticed me from several others visits I made to this particular Startbucks to meet with potential clients. This day he decided to introduce himself, start a conversation and four hours later he was off to a shoot and I was scratching my head trying to absorb all that I learned during the course of those four hours.

We talked medium format, large format, digital, film but lighting mostly. He did some napkin drawings as part of my impromptu course and I am sure the rest of the customers must have thought "get a room why don't you". I was hanging on his every word trying to get all my questions out in the middle of him explaining a prior question; I was like a kid in a candy store. The photographer I am referring to is Bobby Martinez and he lives right here in my town. I didn't get too far into reviewing my images but after his little seminar I thought, let me please do that shoot I just did all over again and please Bobby let me watch you shoot sometime??? Well we exchanged info and off he went to meet a client who came all the way from Chicago to take 5 pictures; yes I did say 5. This might seem crazy to us youngsters but Bobby has been doing this for quite some time and spends most of that time working with the customers on posing and breathing while the rest of it is getting his lighting "just right".

Here are a few of my early favorites of Atoi and Malcolm from the shoot today. I am also looking forward to putting into practice what I learned from Mr. Martinez today. Thanks Bobby!

I had the opportunity to shoot at one of the local colleges in town for one of many Asian organizations in the area promoting cultural awareness through celebrating Chinese New Year. I had a wonderful time as I knew I would meeting people, learning more about the culture and enjoying in the pageantry and colors that are just a part of the Asian culture.

I hadn't shot in almost two months and definitely felt a little rusty but it's like riding a bike right! There were many other photographers present which must have been an interesting sight to see as we ducked and crawled around on the floor trying to get shots, not get in each others way and exchange "hello's" in the process. There wasn't shortage of sights to shoot during the 90 minute program. I took my fair share of photographs during the event but this photo of a little girl trying to REACH onto the stage during one of the performances is one of my early favorites. I believe will stand the test of time and I hope you agree. I call it "REACH".

Jaime and Ryan are Married!

GO West young Man and that’s exactly what I did to shoot my second Destination Wedding and fourth and last wedding of 2009. I had the opportunity to meet Jaime (the bride) a couple of years prior when we worked on a project together as part of a virtual team. I was very new to Photography and Jaime was looking to upgrade her photography gear and we just went from there. The project we worked on together spanned about 12 months and Jaime and I started a friendship. One day out of the blue she said to me, which I will never forget “ When I get married I want you to shoot my wedding”. I thought how cool is that!?! She must see something in my work that I didn’t so I would have to go with her judgment on this one.

Well a couple of years passed, we stayed in touch through email and my Blog and then to my surprise an email from Jaime entitled “I got a ring” to myself and several members of our old team. Well I got my congratulations email out to her and before she could email her request to me I asked “Do you still want me to shoot your wedding?”. She didn’t hesitate with her response of “Yes”! and the rest is pretty much history. I went into 2009 pretty excited about her wedding being towards the end of the year which would give me a chance to try out some things before the wedding, since this would be my very first. The story didn’t end that way as I was blessed with this being #4 for me to wrap up 2009.

From the moment I landed in Spokane after a side trip to Seattle, I felt like part of the Weston/Yob family. Both Ryan (hubby) and Jaime (Mrs. Hubby; I mean Yob) are blessed not just with each other but also with very cool families who made me feel very welcomed throughout. As I was looking through their pictures a few days ago to start my editing, it was hard not to get emotional remembering the time I spent with these wonderful people and all the memories from the rehearsal, dinner, wedding ceremony and reception. I couldn’t have had a better experience to end the 2009 wedding season. More pics to come soon...

Andy and Beth are Married

I had a lot of fun with this couple before the wedding and after the ceremony was over. It's a joy to watch people just having fun being themselves which makes my job as a photographer very easy. I knew the groom about a year prior and had the pleasure of meeting the bride a couple months before the ceremony. As soon as I met her, I knew they were a perfect match for each other and saw the kids as the cherry on top.

I joked around with Beth and started referring to her as "The Blinking Bride" as she blinked on almost every other shot in anticipation of the picture or my flash. Once I saw what she was doing, I just worked around it while making her and the rest of the wedding party laugh about the situation. When I did my editing I wondered why I had so many of the same shot and noticed that only 1 of 3 had her eyes wide open which was followed by a shot of her smirking as she blinked and laughed. There was no blinking however as she looked into Andy's eyes and said "I do". How cool and special a day this was for the couple who I wish all the best for them and their lovely children.

Pike's Place Fish and Noelani - Miss Island Mokihana 2010

I seem to have a knack lately for being in the right place at the right time. While in Seattle I took at trip down to the Public Market Center and Pike's Place Fish. I was hoping to famous market to get a glimpse of what I had only heard about and seen on TV AND maybe see a fish or two flying through the air.

So I got there and saw some of the most amazing seafood ever but the only thing that was flying through the air was crab and I wasn't too impressed; I could have done that myself. So I turned my head for just a MOMENT and there they went, two BIG fish flying through the air. Well I had only myself to blame and figured it would be a while before any other activity so I walked away and visited other parts of the market. Well when I got back I noticed a crowd and thought, you missed it again man. I did notice that there was a new person behind the counter who had dawned the apron and I just figured it was just a new or late arriving employee.

As I listed and watched, I noticed that the crowd was a bit too interested in this woman (who I affectionately referred to as the "fish lady") and they weren't budging. One of the guys at the market stood about 5 feet from her and through a fish to her, she threw it back, her threw it back to her and the cycle repeated itself. At this point I figured out what was happening or what was about to happen so I strategically inserted myself in the crowd, put my camera into high speed mode. The guy now moved out in the crowd with us and the lady he was playing catch with earlier was all the way behind the succession of counters and now he's about to hurl this fish to her in hopes that she's gonna catch it.

Up in the air the fish went, flexed a bit at the apex of the throw and down right into the "fish lady's" awaiting arms. There was a woman who was taking pictures and I could tell by the way the guys at the market were positioning and talking with her that she traveled to the market with the "fish lady". I talked with her and showed her the pictures I took and promised to share them once I got back home. She tried to tell me who the fish lady was but I wasn't paying attention for checking the quality of the shots I took. Well the "fish lady" got cleaned up and joined us in front of the market. I introduced myself and she again told me who she was and it was then that I realized why there was a crowd. The "fish lady" real name was actually Noelani Kauai - Miss Island Mokihana 2010, Miss Garden Isle 2009 and Miss Hawaiiʻi USA (top 10).

Please Don't Stop The Music

Got an introduction into some very cool music when I did this shoot with Ms. Sandra. I'll admit I wasn't actually paying attention in middle school Spanish class so I have no idea where the vocals were going but the music definitely put us in a salsa Cuban mood and off we went.

Sometimes music help relax some of my clients and when the music started with Sandra, I couldn't keep her still as she was dancing to the beats.

One Fall Day

One day this Fall I had the opportunity to meet Jessica. It's not too often that you find someone who's outside spirit matches their inside spirit but now I can check that box. We didn't have much time as Jess was headed back to Chicago and was on a mission to find her cellphone so off we went with a quickness to capture some cool shots while experiencing some of these fall colors.

We started downtown and after the first click of the camera, I knew this was going to be fun as she was lighting up my camera display with that smile. This was one of the quickest photo shoots I've had but the results were very nice. Jess' Mom had been trying to hook us up for quite some time and the persistence was there on both ends and it was well worth the wait. Jess was a pleasure to meet and I hope we get a chance to hook up again.

There're Going Places

This year has been a year of growth for me as a photographer which culminated in the shooting of four weddings. I have had the opportunity to travel to as far east as Jamaica and west as Washington State. Four beautiful brides each with their own stories and "shades of beauty". From friends to family, fiancee of mentees to first time acquaintances. Each wedding, setting and couples story was different and I truly appreciated the opportunity to be part of the "record of their special day".

I have already posted shots from my first wedding and I plan on posting photo's from the others In the meantime here are several of my "favs" from the young people who added to their special day. More to come....

I am not nor do I plan on getting pregnant in the near future; it would really mess up my figure. LOL. Ok, so I got that joke out of the way. I am excited an announce the launch of my new website at www.davidnbeasleyjr.com.

It’s been about 9+ months in the making in terms of trying new things out, learning about the art of photography, practice, practice and more practice and learning to get to the next level of maturity in this business. I have been blessed through the support of my family, mentors and other photographers who have been there to answer questions, critique my work and provide me with the support needed to take this to the next level.

Old site; had to start somewhere. Navigation was kind of clunky, pictures didn’t necessarily display all that well in the small box but it was exactly what I needed based on where I was. Here are a few shots from the old site.

I blogged about my new site a few weeks ago where I discussed the new features and functionality and feel now is the time to “Go Live” with it. I will be adding to the new site as I shoot more of the weddings and other work planned for the rest of 2009 and beyond. Here are a few screen captures from my new site which should be active in the next day or two.

Jessie - Could It Be I've Been Away Too Long!?!

I had the opportunity several weeks ago to do some additional work with Jessie and am just getting around to sharing this with my Blog family. Jessie has already seen these photo's and is eargerly awaiting others from the shoot. Where's the Post?

Okay, so it’s been 9 days since my last post and you may be wondering what I’ve been up to? Where’s the pictures, etc? Well here’s the deal?

I am behind, okay I said it. I have been editing photos of Twyana and Darnell wedding and reception, did an engagement shoot for Gwen and Joe and have started that editing and planning for their wedding this weekend. Shot teen basketball sensation Alyssa Palmer yesterday, working on a post from the work I’ve done with Jessie and trying to figure out a better storage solution as I am approaching 300GB of photo’s from this year alone among other things.

I have also been working on an updated website with new content from photo shoots over the last 12 months. In addition to new pictures, the updates to website will include the following:

· New Splash Page
· Full Screen Images versus the little picture box my current site has today
· Easier navigation and a much cleaner look
· Proofing / Shopping Cart for clients and others to proof and purchase their pictures
· Music Player that allows for multiple music tracks
· iPhone HTML mirror site for the growing number of iPhone users; I hope to be in this number REAL soon

I am also working on a new look for the Blog but that’s probably last on my list of “things to do”. Be patient with me but know that the work has begun.

Married - Twyana + Darnell

One down and three to go. Who would have thought that my first wedding shoot would take place in such a beautiful place as Negril Jamaica. Well it did and I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful couple and environment for my first one.

Over the course of planning, engagement shoot, wedding and reception last night, I feel like we are now members of the family. We met up with Mom, Dad, Granny and Sis in Miami and flew together and hung out with them in Negril. The bride had things on "lock" with all her planning for not only what took place in Jamaica but for the breath-taking reception last night. Even the staff in the ballroom commented that this was the nicest wedding reception they've ever seen in the ballroom.

As I sat last night at the reception and took a small breath from shooting, I reflected on what I learned about Twyana and Dean. It was amazing how each person that gave a toast co-signed with what I had learned about them as individuals and their love for one another. I have so much editing to do from Jamaica and last night's reception but here are a few shots from the wedding in Jamaica.

Caring Soul

Today I "Shot" A Friend...

So what were you thinking when you read that title? Well yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of shooting (with my camera) Tracey, a very dear friend. As I was thinking what to write in relation to this post, I decided to go with how I would best describe Tracey; a very CARING soul.

Without dating either one of us, we’ve known of each other for over 14 years, had a direct working relationship, been neighbors (right across the street) but all the while friends at different levels over that span of time. Well a lot has happened over those 14 years yet Tracey hasn’t visibly aged and definitely not in her heart and her ability to genuinely CARE for people.

Tracey was a little apprehensive about being photographed given the fact that she tries to come across as “shy” at times. So, I gave her some “homework” but also told her not to worry because she was going to have fun and get some good direction from me. We didn’t have a lot of time so we hit a couple of locations and called it a day. I was very impressed with how comfortable she was in front of the camera which really brought forth her natural beauty and CARING heart. I had a tough time picking my favs for her review and to post on the Blog. Here’s are the pics I decided on; enjoy this touch of sunshine in preparation for your weekend!

Destination Wedding #1

Sometimes I get my Facebook and Blog worlds mixed up and I realized that I forgot to mention on my Blog that I was heading to Negril Jamaica to shoot a wedding. Well I am back, had a great time getting to know the bride, groom and their families a little better and am now planning to shoot their state-side reception this weekend.

Jamaica, the Jamaican people, their hospitality as well as the setting for the wedding were all awesome and made for a wonderful experience all around. I must admit that we feel like part of the bride and grooms families after spending so much time together and we're expecting that invite to the barbecue next spring. Anyway, pics from the ceremony are coming next week as I would like the couple to preview first and they are still in Jamaica on their honeymoon. However, I will be sharing a couple of pics from Jamaica here in the next day or two.

I had the distinct honor of photographing a couple of true friends yesterday. These two folks pulled up looking so sharp that we, I mean they, kept on getting stopped by onlookers to make sure they knew how good they looked. You might remember this brotha from my first ever post "first shoot" on the Blog. I also photographed the family last fall in the post "1+1=9". This is just a quick "peek" for now.

Finding My Mojo

Earlier in the year I set some goals for myself and my work along the journey without being 100% sure how I was going to pull a few of them off. I am happy to tell you that all is well.

I started off the year with a goal to shoot two weddings and I am happy to report that I have four weddings that I will be shooting this year; the first of which will be a destination wedding next week in Jamaica. God is good and I have continued to be thankful and faithful for his continued blessings on my life. I can honestly say that it's been a very interesting journey but I needed the journey to help me find, I mean develop my authenticity with this art. Not sure if I have reached my destination yet and I kinda hope I never do but that I continue to grow.

I have had some awesome opportunities with photography in my life and which have led me to India, Washington D.C., California, Tennessee, and now Jamaica and Seattle in mid October. To get paid for something you love to do, are passionate about is a "gift" which I don't take for granted. I often think of how Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods must feel and now that I have had a little taste, I want more.... I do what I do "part-time" and I'm not putting any limitations of myself and where this will take me. I am just going to be ever clear on the source of my blessings. I have a few pictures to post later today but I wanted to get this out of my head and onto the Blog.

Photography has got to be one of the most complicated, frustrating and time consuming undertakings I have ever embarked on. But at the same time has been one of the most rewarding, fulfilling and inspirational things I have ever done in my life. There to much meat on this bone for me to go into now but I often reflect how I have been finding my "Mojo" over this past year. Thanks to those who read and subscribe to my Blog (Clo, Pru, Angel, eRic and others) for noticing and giving me that feedback. Environmentally Friendly

"Photographer knocks woman over the head with camera lens"; that was almost the headline from this shoot. Here are a few shots from the "Picture Perfect" shoot which was my attempt to do a better job at incorporating the surrounding environment/backgrounds into my work as well as a little experimenting. We both had to get comfortable with the different looks and I will tell you that it was definitely a "journey" for both of us.

One of the nicest compliments I received from Jessie, in between the "I don't like that", etc, was that she is considering getting one of the photo's blown up to hang on her wall; that made my day!!!. Enjoy these and I have a few more of my favorites to post later.

Picture Perfect

I had a couple postpone their lifestyles session today but I still needed to get out and shoot to stay sharp for an upcoming wedding in two weeks. My plan is to shoot at least once a week if not more so I can stay on my game prior to the wedding. Here is one of the fruits of my labor with more to come next week.

By birth I was premature (mini guy with big dreams), African American with a very gentle and kind spirit.

By stature, I am 6’ 3” 200+ pounds and have been told that I can be intimidating but have also been told that I am a BIG HUGGY BEAR

By nature, I am kind, caring, enthusiastic, comedic, shy, competitive, intense and pace pallet red if you will.

By education I am a mathematician, computer scientist and chemist but that was not my complete calling.

By region I am in Illinois but home will ALWAYS be the East Coast (New Jersey).

By way of passions:

I adore my family and how they continue to bless me each day through their kind words, actions and support.

I love people, showing and explaining their gifts to them that are obvious to me, never been told to them before and not yet revealed or acknowledged by them

Your Majesty

This is what I thought to myself when Preethi walked down the stairs in her traditional Indian reception dress. It was a sight to see and all Angel and I could say was “Wow”!!! Preethi showed us the dress in an online catalog prior to the shoot but the catalog did not prepare us for what we witnessed with our own eyes when she entered the room. Our little Indian princess was a bit nervous at first but I soon found that she did her “homework” and the rest was magic.

Even though we had spoken a few times and passed each other in the hallway, we were still getting to know Preethi. Well after last weekend, I would say “Mission Accomplished”; sorry George. For those that know me, I have special ways to get people comfortable in front of the camera and they seem to work most of the time. I was in rare form with Preethi and she found out firsthand how crazy I can get. I enjoy shooting everyone who steps in front of my camera but it was a true “honor” to shoot her and to watch her transform as the shoot progressed. The day was magic and we had one wardrobe change that yielded another set of spectacular colors. For this post, I have chosen a combination of color and black and white shots. I am working on mastering my B&W editing skills and love how these turned out.

From a technical standpoint, we worked with a single Alienbee B800, 45” white satin shoot-through umbrella, 20/40 degree grid spots and some LUCK. It was an awesome learning experience as in “be careful removing the HOT GRID SPOT “ouch” and try not to impale the person you’re photographing with the umbrella post when repositioning the umbrella. Greatest Show on Earth

Okay, I admit, this has nothing to do with photography or does it? No pictures to share but this is more about perspective and understanding how the world around is continuing to evolve at an astronomical rate; here's the connection...

The thing I love about photography the most is how the photographer MUST evolve as well as how the art is evolving. This is one of the most challenging crafts/professions I have even been in as well as one of the most exciting!!!. Just when you get something figured out, another aspect of this job/hobby rears it's ugly head. On top of that you get hit like I did a few weeks ago and someone refers to what you do as "Art" and that put a whole new perspective on things; WOW!!!

The video to me is not just about incredible stats on how the world and technology has changed/is changing but more about evolution and keeping pace while "FOCUSing on what's most important..." We can't lose sight of that point in this technoglobalistic (made that one up) society we are building as there has to be some point to all of this. As a photographer I often have to remind myself that I/WE have the awesome job of capturing all of this through the work we do. What other profession on the face of this planet can say that???

I Got Sunshine

This is probably the best way to describe our shoot with Jessie. Having never really spent any time with her, we had to warm up to Jessie and she to us. So the first order of business was to figure out how to accomplish this and where to shoot. We started out at the Special Olympics Memorial for a few shots and to see what the light was doing. We told Jessie to get in the grass and she didn’t hesitate for one moment. Before we knew it, she and her black pumps were all over the place following our direction. We provided the jokes “I’m here all week”, the facial and posing direction and off she went… No surface was too high or too dirty for Jessie.

We then pulled up in the parking lot of Maxwell Parkand immediately noticed this Pepsi truck parked “all by its lonesome” so I said “let’s have at it”. From there we walked the park, took her over to this cool bridge and then the baseball diamond to finish up about 90 minutes of shooting. I love the warmth in several of these shots which was a result of the sun turning orange (golden hour) about 45 minutes before sunset; this is becoming my favorite time to shoot. I adore what I do and have learned a lot over the last 6-7 months. It helps when you have clients and subjects that take direction well and are willing to experiment; Jessie was all of that and more. Coke, Pepsi, doesn't matter because this is all about Jessie. We met Jessie just a week or so ago and off we went to test out her camera personality. We hit two different locations, did some jumping jacks, played around in the baseball dugout and hung out at the Pepsi truck for a different backdrop. They used to say "Coke adds life" but I am here to tell you that Jessie livens up the camera. Stay tuned for more....

JoAnne - Part 2

Last month I had the opportunity to meet Joe who is a lovely young lady who can give several different awesome looks in the wink of an eye. She can been seen in my post entitled "Fashionable" but here are a few more gems from our first visit.

When Joe, her Mom and nephew walked through the door I said "Wow"; this young lady is very cute and going to be fun to shoot. Joe and I never met, so I started telling her about myself, kids, family and passion for photography and then off we went to shoot. Almost immediately we formed a trust which led to some great photo's and the beginning of journey as I find more opportunities to showcase her through my work. Several weeks ago, I shot a reception party for a couple of friends. I had another shoot prior to this where I strained my back but got some great pictures. No time for an ice pack or heating pad, I had to make a quick "pit stop" at home to change clothes, pick up my sons and head out to the next to shoot. There were several great photo opportunities during the evening but I chose these two as my favorites for now.

Trust between a photographer and subject isn't something that is given but it is earned; especially when you are experimenting or trying something new as I was a couple of weeks ago with these three young ladies.

Several weeks ago, I got the bright idea of doing a “mini fashion shoot” to play with some different aspects of lighting and showcase these three very beautiful young ladies. I had worked with two of them in the past and brought a new young lady into the mix who is very eager to learn more about modeling. This would be all off camera lighting with some “make shift” backgrounds I made from foam core. I thought that if the seasoned pros can do it then so can I. Don’t let anybody fool you, it is hard work getting the lighting right, especially if you don’t have access to or a permanent studio setup.

I love photography and I like challenges so off I went with my oldest son in tow. Well I was a bit overwhelmed when everyone first got there but thank God for my oldest son who was a tremendous help to his Dad. Each model posed in three different outfits and we were hopping moving the light around, adjusting backgrounds, etc. While I’m not ready to call Glamour Magazine, I am pleased with how things turned out from this session and wanted to share some of the top pictures from the day. Being the person I am, I have analyzed my performance/work to the Nth degree and will be using what I learned as I move forward. This shoot was purposely done “in tight” based on my vision and what I had in the way of backgrounds. It was a great learning experience and I got some lovely photo’s for these young ladies. Not sure where I will go with this fashion thing but much of photography is about trying new things and learning from the experiences.

Sprinkles Cupcakes

I wrote earlier about my Southern California experience in Sprinkles Cupcakes. I was not familiar with the franchise prior but the long lines (I mean enthusiastic crowds) got me curious but above all THE TASTE will have me on the web trying to find one near where I am going; wish we had one here.

Now these cupcakes aren’t for those on diets (waist or wallet) but that’s right you deserve it!!! Matter of fact you earned it!!! Close your eyes, slide that credit card and get your mouth ready for some excitement. I am a believer now but I had to get there. I was ready to roll once I saw the lines outside of Sprinkles in Beverly Hills and thought maybe a visit to their Newport Beach location would yield something different and it did; different LOCATION same lines. I think these people followed me here. My next hurdle was the price; they ain’t cheap but once I got my fix, I was looking for an opportunity to cut the line or lift one off of some unsuspecting child. I only had a ½ of one but damn it was good. If you have one in your neck of the woods then “bless you”; can you hook a brother up!!! If you don’t but you travel, go to Sprinkles Cupcakes and see if they have one where you’re headed. You won’t be disappointed with the exception of wishing you got some for the road!!!

In between running errands, batting cages and two evening baseball games with the boys, I was able to get in a shoot with JoAnne. I was pressed for time but anxious to shoot Ms. JoAnne who was a real trooper throughout the time we spent together battling the wind and rain. I would have rather shot her several hours earlier in the day while the clouds were dancing with sun but I had too many things going on. So we ducked the harsh rays of the sun and found shelter in the shadows for some quick pictures. I had fun with Jo and will post a couple more pictures as I finish my editing.

Lauren - Better Late Than Never

We are VERY excited to present our last teen model to the MIY project; meet Lauren. We spent a couple of hours getting to know Lauren and then taking some shots of her to get a feel for her camera personality. She's going to be a lot of fun to work with and we found that she is truly at her most comfortable state when she is being herself.

We had to deal with loud music, downpour of rain and even witnessed a beautiful rainbow during our time with Lauren. I had a lot of fun following her around as she "did her". This is just a teaser for what's to come from her involvement with the MIY project. Welcome aboard Lauren!!

She Got Her Own

Last weekend we shot Ms. Jaime for the Model in You project that we are putting on in the community. This was a VERY fun experience with a VERY nice and lovely young lady which you will soon see. The shoot took a little under 5 hours and included four outfit changes, one motorcycle, maneuvering through fences at night in dark alleys and many onlookers throughout the day. I have to take my hat off to Jaime who was battling a cold but we didn’t know it till almost the end of the shoot. I used all three of my lenses from my wide angles (16mm -35mm and 24mm – 70mm) to my BIG zoom (70mm – 200mm). This helped me capture her from many different perspectives throughout the day.

You learn a lot about people when you spend a ½ day with them and all I can say is look out for “Ms. Independent”. More coming soon including a slideshow.

Best Laid Plans

“The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men Often Go Astray”; I heard that in a movie once. Well I had planned to do much more blogging then I have over the last two months but family and a computer that has been acting up have slowed me down a bit. Well I got the computer up and running again; almost and will do some major editing this weekend for Mr. Malcolm’s slideshow and shots from the Black Canvas project.

I will be taking my website www.davidnbeasleyjr.com down next week to transfer the hosting to Go Daddy. I have never done this before so I hope it goes well. I also got a chance to shoot last week with my 16-35mm 2.8L II USM lens and all I can say is OMG!!! I have a couple of weddings coming up in the fall and I am excited to see what this lens brings to the table. Now I still love my 24-70mm 2.8L USM but can you say “open wide”. The 16-35 allows me to get so much more in the frame which is how I was able to get the picture of Malcolm under the cross.

I also visited Sprinkles Cupcakes while on vacation and will be posting about that. There’s just so much to do (I have a full-time job by the way in addition to photography) but there’s just not enough time to get it all in. Spring is here and we have a shoot with Jaime this weekend which will be our second official MIY shoot; she will be fantastic.

Been Away Too Long..

Sorry I’ve been away from the Blogosphere for a bit. My Mark III is back in my possession and I have been putting it through its paces. I still think there is a focusing issue with the camera but I don’t have time to send it back to Cannon for another look. The weekend before last I shot the Black Canvas Project and yesterday one of our MIY models who going to make a run at modeling. Once you see his pictures you’ll quickly realize that this young man has a great chance at making it.

Yesterday’s shoot with Malcolm went very well but this darn wind in Central Illinois bent my photography umbrella, broke my cold shoe flash bracket and sawed off my brass monkey. I was too busy to get pissed and think about how much that gust of wind cost me. I knew I should have gotten some sand bags so it’s my fault. I am headed out of town this weekend, west coast bound, so a couple quick post this week and I will be offline for 11 days but will have some very cool shots when I get back.

Location, location, location...

Location, location, location.... The more I understand about photography, the more possibilities I see in places to shoot in and around town. There are some very cool places and walls in our little town that will be great for our models with some contrasting clothing and warming techniques. I have approximately 4-6 good outdoor locations to shoot at and will be exploring shadows, etc like the ones I found in this shoot with the bridge.

This downtown location is off the beaten path and we are going to use it for our MIY project. I'll be honest with you, I would have never thought to use this location or looked for it in the place we found it. I need to do some studying up on where the light is at certain times of the day in order to have it yield the most for us with this project. Until then..

Divas in Training

Today we met with what we thought would be our "last teen" for MIY (Model in You). Well we got our last teen (Jafari), her sister Brittany and Sasha and another opportunity to shoot Brie. It was a full compliment of "Divas in Training" and they were a ball and wore us out BIG TIME!!! So much youth, energy and Divaness; yes I made that word up.

Note to self; pay attention to the time of day as the shadows and brightness of the sun was very challenging forus ang these young ladies.

I took this picture a couple of months ago in our very first "Model in You" meeting. I actually didn't remember it or must not have been that impressed until last night. I got home late from work yesterday, was listening to a podcast, booted up lightroom and went "OMG"!!!

I had a chance to spend several minutes with Tomeika's Dad and found out that aside from being very beautiful, she is definitely "daddy's little girl". I believe this picture provides a window into that side of who she is. We will mature our vision for Tomeika's shoot next month but enjoy this closeup for now.

MIY - All About the "E"

Yesterday we met with Libby, Jenny and Bonnie who are our newest models to MIY. All three of these ladies have an "E" sound in their name thus the title of this Blog. As you can see, all of three of these models have another thing in common; they are beautiful and they look good in front of the camera.

We met out at the NV Lounge and had the entire upstairs to ourselves. I want to ask the owners if we can use their place to do a photo shoot as the upstairs has some very big and beautiful windows and I think we can do some very cool things with the light coming in from these windows. We have one more meeting before we start meeting with all the models individually but for now, it's all about the "E".

Work to Do....

I was talking with a friend the other day who shared a story with me about the death of someone they worked closely with. As for all losses, for us it seems untimely but there is another plan at work that's been in motion for quite some time that we need to bring into the equation... We are all still here to be instruments of execution of this plan and continue the ability to breathe in and out because we still have work to do... Sometimes when loss occurs we often ask "why them and not me"? I'm not going to begin to pontificate on the answer to this question other then to say "we still have work to do" and this is how I replied to my friend when asked the question above.

The work doesn't have to be overly profound or anything but profoundness because it's all relative and seasonal. It could be a life changing discovery like a cure for aids, taking on a new job that could lead to becoming President of the United States or an encouraging word at the right time. A word that could make the difference between success and failure, discovery and enlightenment or life and death. You/we may never know but that's some of the context of the work we still have to do or in some situations continue.

Have you ever had someone say to you "you saved my life" and you were left wondering "so what exactly was it that I did again"? Does a knife know that it will be saving a life today in the operating room? Do lungs know that they in concert with the lips may be extending life to family member or stranger till the paramedics arrive? Does the brain know that in partnership with the eyes, hands and lips that it will be giving a talk that will change a nation, avert war and save lives? The "work" and the scenarios go on and on... This is very powerful to me, not to be taken lightly or abused but to possibly broaden, add purpose and perspective.

As for me, in the context of "behind the lens", I still have work to do on FOCUSing on what's most important... As I mentioned in a previous post for me it's photography, photojournalism, and photojournalashion (new concept I am working on). I look at photography as an instrument to serve others as I wrote about in "we serve". It's pretty cool when you consider the power of photojournalism through the significance of pictures, perspective and expression. I am having a lot of fun with this and understand now that photography is extending me out to the world to expand what I do/did and I am having a lot of fun in the process. I have come to realize that I didn't choose "it" rather "it" chose me. And because of that, I have a lot of "work to do" to help bring focus on what's most important...

So for everyone reading this Blog entry, you too still have work to do... As with this water fountain, be very clear about your impact but take time to step back and see how it's reflected on the world to keep yourself energized and focused. Be blessed in your work ahead.

Finding Purpose in Seasons - Pay Attention

I am meeting today with one of the Models from "The Model in You - Beauty in Diversity" project. Her life's journey is taking her down another path and things are happening in her life just the way they were intended to. With her move, she will not be able to participate in our project but this project is more than modeling; it's about diversity and I am also finding that it's about making lasting connections with people and influencing lives. I believe influencing lives in a positive way is one of the greatest gifts we can give to each other and especially those who were strangers to us prior to our encounter.

Maday is special and it didn't take me long to figure that out; I didn't mean in that way. She has a very special personality that lights up a room and brings energy to everyone around her. She is going back to the West Coast and aside from being jealous (I lived there for 5 years) I am glad we had her for a season.

Sometimes life's journey's take us places we never expected to go or back to places we've already been because our work was not done or we needed to go pick up an "experience" or two and go back and finish our work. We may not completely understand it while we are going through it but it does get revealed if we "paying attention".

For a season, I am glad I got a chance to meet Maday and I wish her all the best as she continues her journey on another coast. While her departure may seem earlier then its season, she accomplished her reason for being with us. I challenged her to spend time, once she gets settled on her new coast, understanding her purpose here as she puts the pieces into context. We talked a lot about "paying attention" and really knowing why things happened and using those lessons and growth opportunities to move forward. Sometimes we think things happen because of our own doing, actions or "in actions" and sometimes that is true. Other times it's because we served our purpose and it's time to move on. I realize not everyone will be able to understand this message and I would have blown past it a couple of years ago myself; what a difference a day, or in my case, two years makes.

Pastor Carrington of Friendship Baptist Church in Yorba Linda California preached about this one day while I was attending service and while I heard the message, I didn't fully understand the significance of it's meaning on my life. Probably because I heard him but wasn't really "paying attention" or wasn't ready. Work with me on this... We feed babies milk versus steak because their little bodies/systems are still developing and aren't ready for it. I was not completely ready for the message when it was preached to me almost 14 years ago but it was significant enough to stay with me all these years.

Also, sometimes we are given things in pieces, pieces small enough for us to handle. In my discussion with Maday I was talking about my experience in meeting Alexia. I told her that I thought I was running up to my hotel room to grab my camera to take pictures of "lobby lights". That's what I had in mind but God had a different plan. His plan for me was to meet Alexia and connect her with a mentor; MISSION ACCOMPLISHED by the way. The prideful part of me actually though I had something to do with this connection but I realized today that I was an instrument in bringing Alexia and her mentor together. I would love to get "the rest of the story" from Alexia and her mentor as they get to know each other and start working on her future but maybe it's not for me to know. My purpose may have been just to connect these two; only God knows and time will tell. I say all of this to say that we need to spend more time "paying attention" and be careful about who we give credit to as we all are just instruments.

Perspective

"My 100th Post"!!! I think it's fitting to devote a Blog entry for my 100th post to "perspective". When I began this craft almost two years ago, I was embarking on a journey not knowing where I was going but trying desperately to rediscover something; myself. Mission accomplished!!! Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center

They (not sure who "they" are) say size doesn't matter.... That was the farthest from their minds when they built this BIG BOY - Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center !!!!! This Gaylord Hotel is the granddaddy of the Gaylord's and this guy is HUGE...

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had a chance to visit Nashville Tennessee and my first stop was the Gaylord Opryland. It was very cold outside so I was dressed in my long sleeved Jordan shirt (blue and black with long john like material) and a pair of Jordan (#23) jeans. Needless to say I was unprepared for the tropical like environment inside the Gaylord. I shot for about two hours and was pouring sweat before I ponied up to the bar for a cold yet smooth adult beverage.

This hotel was awesome and I am putting together a slideshow similar to the one I did for the Gaylord at National Harbor last year. So for now, enjoy this teaser...

Graffiti Train

While in Dallas the week before last, I passed by this train on the way into the office. I got a flash of the graffiti as we rode by and thought, "I need to shoot this train before I leave Dallas". So, I got up the next morning around 6:30am and hit the tracks!

In order to pull this off I had to deal with three issues; 1) I only had 30 minutes, 2) fear of a live train coming down the tracks and 3) fear of the police or another public official stopping by to pay me an unexpected visit. You'd be amazed with the number of vehicles and other things whose sounds resembles that of a train. This is what happens when you let fear rule your thoughts as it did mine that day. I was thinking to myself about the headline (s) I didn't want to appear in the paper. "Man gets drug on train tracks with camera in tow" OR, " The "popo" arrest suspicious man claiming to be taking photo's of an out-of-service train".

The very fact that I am Blogging this lets you know that I accomplished my mission without harm but I was startled a few times as this was an active rail and there was a brand spanking new train on the tracks beside this one just waiting for "the man" so he could get its "choo-choo" on.

Alexia "Miss Teen Tennessee Latina"

This evening, I was in the lobby of the Courtyard Marriott in Franklin Tennessee taking pictures of this wonderful ceiling. While there, a lady (Rose Medina) asked me about my camera and whether I took pictures professionally. She quickly realized that this was my passion, I handed her my business card and we were off from there.

I explained the places I have been, where I've shot and learned more about her and her daughters backgrounds. I learned that her daughter Alexia was "Ms. Teen Tennessee Latina 2009_2010", a freshman in high school with ambitions towards practicing law. I asked her Mom if she wouldn't mind me taking her picture, she said yes and off Alexia and I went to another part of the lobby. I shot her for a quick minute and we talked for about 30 minutes until she had to go. This is where I learned a lot about her, the places she's lived, her life ambition, love for animals and animal rights. This is a wonderful, awesome and driven little woman and I can't wait to see her blossom as she represents Tennessee latinas in her "teen" title and as she pursues her dream. Now Alexia wasn't real excited about me taking her picture cold where she didn't have time to prepare but you tell me, isn't she beautiful and isn't this a great shot?

The Girlz

I know I haven't blogged for a while (10 days to be exact) but I have been busy at work and traveling (just got back from Texas). It hasn't stopped me from shooting , just slowed down the editing and blogging process for me. I have some very cool shots from Texas including the Gaylord Texan and will be visiting another Gaylord Opryland Luxury in Tennessee during my visit to there.

Anyway, before I took off to Texas, I met with the two of the teens (Brie and Ashlyn) in our Model in You (MIY) program. If you frequent my blog then you see Brie's picture or half picture in my banner. I have had the pleasure of shooting her, her brother, her mother, mother and aunt, grandmother and grandfather so her family is featured all over my work. Don't tell anyone but Brie is my favorite.

There's also Ashlyn and I am really looking forward to shooting her with the project and watching her smile and personality blossom as she gets more comfortable with me and Angel. She has a very cool personality and the camera loves her.

So, here are "The Girlz".

MIY Models - All about the Pets

Last night we had another quick MIY meeting; kinda puts you in the mindset of Mission Impossible doesn't it. LOL. We met with Eileen and Atoi and at one point I felt like it was "girl night" and I didn't get the memo. I sat back and listened to them share stories about pets, cats, etc. and just laughed/marveled at how well these ladies and Angel clicked. Both Eileen and Atoi were tired after working all day, then our meeting so we got some quick shots and sent them home to beddy bye. For now, here's Atoi.

We are making progress with our MIY project and added two more models (Kelli and Jeff) to the fray. I continue to be impressed with the diversity in looks, background and initial ideas for their shoots and how we may pair up some of our models. Each one add something very unique to the group and that is awesome.

"We Serve"

We had another meeting last night with a couple new models to the project so I got home kind of late. I was a bit frustrated with the lighting; ok with myself with the lighting issues I was having, so when I got home I sat in front of the TV and watched the end of the movie Troy. As I sat there and watched the bad guys get what I thought they deserved, it hit me how we sometimes miss the blessings others bring to our lives (even the bad guys); maybe because we’re not paying attention or not just connecting the dots….

I thought about the “hurt” I wanted them to feel for their evil ways/pain they’ve caused the good guys. As I thought more about this I quickly realized that “hurt” is a strong and strange emotion but after the pain and discovery we always come out better if we focus on the self-awareness piece. This came to me as I was urging on the good guys to kill as many of the bad guys as possible. As I reflected on my own life, I needed my pain and disappointments to help me with my FOCUSing on what’s most important…

In our meetings with the models, we’ve been talking about our backgrounds in an effort to get to know each other better. I made the mistake in our meeting with Elaine, well it really wasn’t a mistake, but I asked Angel how she would describe “me”. And after I said the words I started to get a little anxious on how she would respond. It was very cool to hear someone else describe you and how you’ve influenced their lives in a positive way. Basically Angel described how I influenced her to set and realize some goals for herself and her work and it was very touching, flattering and maybe even a little embarrassing to hear how much that meant to her as I wasn’t expecting it. As I meet people, there is a part of me that wants to help them reach their true potential and realize their path has always been there and that they just needed to step from behind the "post" or maybe the "building" to see what’s there before them. Sometimes they find that it is a post and not a building (basically a smaller much more manageable obstacle).

We (Angel, Elaine and I) went on further to talk about the fact that the encounters we have with each other are not by chance but are part of our destiny. Sometimes we know the purpose, other times it is revealed to us much later in the relationship or in our lives. In my own life there have been friendships I have formed that I have depended on so much but never knew how significant those friendships/relationships would be in my life as they were forming. Seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years have passed with each of us experiencing life’s good times and hard times but we’ve been there with unconditional love and support for each other. The one thing that is true about these relationships is that we’ve figured out that “we serve” one another and that it’s not just about us. I must admit that I have been struggling for about 4 years with one past relationship where I have been harboring a good amount of anger and hatred. As I wrote this post I realized that had it not been for this pain, I wouldn't have discovered my passion and this Blog and my other 4 wouldn't exist. I'm not going to lie, I am not all the way there with this person but I am on the road to forgiveness and that's progress.

This project (MIY), which is still very young but maturing, has already been a blessing to Angel I behind the camera but I am more excited about what the project will mean to each of the people who are modeling for us and what it could mean to the community. Connections will be made, friendships formed and who knows how and when each of us will need to call upon each other for advice, help, etc. I believe in calling things out for how I envision them and claiming the prize. We (Angel and I) are about building portfolios but quickly realized that we are doing so much more in serving each other and these people through photography. Bringing out what makes them unique as a group and as individuals is they key and “The Beauty in Diversity”.

Meet Elaine

More meetings with models this weekend and today was all about Elaine. I approached her while she was working and discussed the latest project (MIY) I am working with Angel Sallade on. I had my doubts about whether she would agree to participate and actually show up for our meeting but as it turned out, we had her, I mean she had us all to herself. Tomorrow will be a challenge as we will probably meet with our largest group yet but today was all about Elaine.

We visited with her for almost two hours and shared our stories and we got to learn a lot about her. I already have several ideas on how to shoot her but you're going to have to "wait and see". She was a lot of fun and VERY comfortable in front of the camera and I even asked her twice whether she's modeled before. This was her first time though and she's a natural.

Just do it!

In a recent post, I showcased some shots I took of some mouth watering food at the Destihl restaurant for an organization named “Path”. I had almost all of my equipment at the shoot to ensure the proper lighting and give myself and Angel the maximum amount of flexibility to move around, shoot from different angels while ensuring our lighting and ultimately the food looked great. I knew the look I was going for and thanks to Ross; I understood how to manipulate the output power on my flash so I was good to go. This was my first attempt at truly shooting food and I think the results pretty much speak for themselves. One of the things that helped me was that I took time the day before to stop by the restaurant, talk with and get to know the hostess, scope out potential locations to shoot the food and check my lighting and the best solution for a background. In the past I would have either gone into things “cold” or over thought the entire process. Having a better understanding of how my equipment works made a huge difference along with my preparation. My goal for the next shoot is to do some creative things with the shoot, maybe not for the event marketing materials but maybe just for my own personal portfolio.

I have titled this post “Just do it” to say that sometimes you have to do your preparation as best you can and go for it!!! Understanding and having confidence in your talents, abilities, leveraging past experiences and making adjustments along the way are very important. Loving what you do is the fuel that will keep things going and understanding that “it” chose you and you didn’t choose it is key. I have found that putting my dreams, desires and passions out into the universe has brought growth, confidence and a desire to continue to test the limits of my abilities. This has been an awesome start to 2009 and I want to also thank everyone who reached out to me to help me realize my 2009 goals. If there are others who feel led to help me with any aspect of my 2009 goals, please feel free to contact me. I welcome the mentorship, help and support that results from collaboration.

The Model in You - Part 2

We had our second kickoff meeting yesterday with another group of models after we shot the "mouth watering" food at Destihl; Manny baby, you should have hooked us up with a plate. We were both tired and made the mistake of trying to shoot in the dark. Well anyone with a digital camera knows they don't like the dark when it comes to the autofocus system. That was a BIG "note to self". Anyway, here's more diversity lookin' at you. Two down and one more meeting to go. Isn't it beautiful baby!

Well we are almost done with January and as promised here are my 2009 goals for the year. I have been blessed with what I have been able to accomplish in a short 26 days and here's what I am planning for the next 339. It's only through being whole again that I am able to do this and I am excited about where God will take me with the business in this stage of my maturity. I will be adding goals and hopefully checking things off each month as the year progresses but wanted to start here. I am going to use prayer and elements from "The Secret" to energize and guide my path.

On the journey.....

1. Consistently pray before getting out of bed, starting any shoot and ending my day

2. Shoot two weddings (1- second shooter and 1 primary shooter or some derivative of the two)
3. Do a shoot with another professional photographer

4. Streamline client meetings

5. Identify someone with marketing and graphic design experience that can help me with plans, logo and designs for website, Blogs and print materials.

6. Develop logo, branding and other marketing materials for business

7. Develop new business cards with new logo and theme.

8. Develop theme for business - Done (“FOCUSing on what's most important!”)

9. Add new innovative and creative elements/offering to the Blog

10. Identify opportunities for small impromptu shoots

11. Improve comfort level with on/off camera flashes, strobes and umbrellas

12. Refine my photo editing processes in Lightroom and Photoshop

13. Refine process for managing (archiving/backing up)images

14. Get work published in print (book or magazine)

15. Make time to post to other photographers Blogs
